When you become a member of the HSPC, you're helping to support programs and services that save the lives of animals. Did you know that in a single year the Humane Society of Polk County is a temporary home for close to 2,000 animals? We take in animals surrendered by the public, or stray and abandoned animals found in the county. It is our primary mission to offer refuge, nourishment, medical care -- and to find a loving home for life for every healthy and treatable animal surrendered to us. The Humane Society of Polk County serves local people and their pet companions. We are not affiliated with any national organization or branch of government, so donation dollars provide benefits and services to animals and their guardians right here in Polk County, including:
- Shelter, food, and veterinary care for homeless animals
- Pet adoptions at the shelter and at off-site events
- Free and low-cost spay/neuter for low-income families' dogs and cats
- Foster care for sick, injured, and pregnant animals every year
- Partnership with Meals on Wheels to match older people with the perfect older animal companions
- Lifesaving medical care including surgery
- Behavior rehabilitation for dogs and cats with problems
- Humane education programs including the adoption of every 3rd grade classroom in Polk County Public Schools
- Animal cruelty and neglect investigations
Membership is perhaps the most important fundraiser for the Humane Society of Polk County. Membership dollars support day-to-day operating costs like electricity, staffing, and phone service, as well as program expenses including mailings and Pause for Paws, our newsletter.
