If you’ve ever been to the Humane Society of Polk County you won’t be shocked by this news: we urgently need to build a new home!  Built in 1980, our current building, located on Sage Road just off Dundee Road is dilapidated, ill suited and overcrowded.  Decades of daily cleaning have left our current shelter literally crumbling around us. Our offices and lobby are portable “Bull Sheds” placed together with battle scars from the triple hurricanes, poor and aging ventilation throughout the facility fight a losing battle to prevent the spread of viruses among the animal population.

The building wasn’t designed with the needs of animals facing a long shelter stay in mind. The barking from large kennel rooms blasts out a wall of noise, escalating stress for animals understandably skittish already.
